Curriculum

While in Ghana, students will take two courses (LA 478 and EDUC 373).

LA 478 (4): Cultivating Citizenship

This course examines the social, economic, political, and cultural roots of today’s world while building global citizenship.  It focuses on the major developments, events, and ideas that have shaped the world since the beginning of the twentieth century.  Students master concepts and categories that allow them to grasp the development of the contemporary world, thus providing them with a framework to understand our times, help cultivate among students the skills to see connections, dilemmas, and contradictions to help them engage as citizens in a rapidly changing global society.

EDUC 373 (3): Introduction to West African Education

This is a three-hour course designed to provide an introduction to the teaching profession as practiced in Ghana.  This will include an examination of current issues faced by teachers, as well as influences on the profession, and influences on curriculum design and planning.  Students will reflect on their observations and compare the US education system to the Ghanaian education system.
